Fosa septică ecologică (biologică) se deosebește de o fosă septică de sedimentare prin compartimentarea specială. În primul compartiment se produce decantarea apei, iar în a doilea depozitarea și fermentarea nămolului (sedimentelor).
Compartimentul de decantare are forma unui jgheab simplu, de formă circulară, cu radierul înclinat, și este prevazut cu o fantă îngustă pe toată lungimea, prin care nămolul decantat trece în compartimentul inferior.
Aflat sub un strat gros de apă, sub acțiunea bacteriilor nămolul intră în fermentare anaeroba criofilă, cu producere de biogaz. (Anaerob înseamna condiții cu lipsă de oxigen, iar criofil se referă la faptul că, fermentarea se desfășoară la temperatura apei uzate din bazin, de 5-15 gr. C, fără încălzire.)
Biogazul este un amestec de gaze, în proporție de cca. 60 % metan (CH4), cca. 39 % bioxid de carbon (CO2), în rest hidrogen (H2), hidrogen sulfurat (H2S) și altele. Din cauza metanului, fosele septice și fosele biologice prezintă pericol de explozie ! Ele trebuie prevăzute cu aerisire pentru evacuarea gazelor acumulate.
Hidrogenul sulfurat cauzează mirosul înțepător de ouă clocite. Cu o bună întreținere însă, a fosei septice, acest miros este abia perceptibil.
Nămolul fermentat trebuie evacuat o dată sau de două ori pe an prin vidanjare!
Această soluție este indicată locuințelor permanente cu până la 10 locuitori.
